Mexico v New Zealand: Hernandez keen to reap rewards of Portugal late show

Javier Hernandez wants Mexico to make their dramatic late comeback against Portugal count when they face New Zealand in the Confederations Cup in Sochi on Wednesday.

New Roma recruit Hector Moreno pounced in stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw in Kazan, where Cedric Soares appeared to have sealed the points for the European champions.

It was the second time Juan Carlos Osorio s men came from behind in an undulating match, with Hernandez heading home in the 42nd minute after Ricardo Quaresma opened the scoring.

The Gold Cup holders are heavy favourites heading into their next Group A assignment at Fisht Stadium, with New Zealand nursing a 2-0 defeat to Russia last Friday – a match that saw the All Whites tick past 500 minutes without a goal at the Confederation…

´Very proud´ Belgium stunned by fans´ fury after setting up France clash

Belgium s players were surprised, confused and disappointed by the response of their supporters after scraping into the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a goalless draw against Ukraine on Wednesday.

The Red Devils needed only a point from their final Group E match to be sure of a place in the knockout stage, but they could have topped the group with a win.

Instead, having been held by Ukraine in another toothless display, Belgium will have to face France in the next round, thrust into what is widely considered the tougher half of the draw.

Despite those permutations, Belgium opted to protect their point in the closing stages, rather than chase a winner.

So, when the final whistle sounded, the travelling Belgian fans jeered their players instead of joining in the…

Chelsea eye Llorente move

Chelsea are keen on signing Swansea City forward Fernando Llorente, according to the Independent.

The Premier League champions are on the lookout for further reinforcements having brought in Alvaro Morata for a club record transfer fee on Friday.

Llorente played with Morata under Blues boss Antonio Conte at Juventus in the 2014/15 campaign where together they won the Serie A title.

We didn´t give Espanyol a chance – Valverde

Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde said his side did not give Espanyol a sniff, in their Copa del Rey semi-final victory.

The Basque club were 3-1 aggregate winners, after reigning 2-0 at Espanyol s Cornella-El Prat in the second leg on Wednesday.

Aggressors from the outset, Bilbao struck twice in the first half via Aritz Aduriz and Xabier Etxeita to put the tie beyond doubt with Espanyol unable to get even one of the three goals they required thereafter.

Coming into the clash, Espanyol had the slight advantage as a home 0-0 draw would have sent them through to the final on away goals.

But it was Bilbao who progressed to the May 29 decider, which will see them play Barcelona in the Copa final for a third time in seven years.

Espanyol played w…

Manchester United Champions League exit ´no surprise´ for Silvestre

Manchester United s exit from the Champions League should come as no surprise, according to former defender Mikael Silvestre.

A 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg on Tuesday consigned Louis van Gaal s side to a place in the Europa League after they managed just two victories from their six group games.

Ex-midfielders Paul Scholes and Roy Keane were scathing in their assessments of United s performances this season, especially in Europe, and Silvestre likewise feels their failure to reach the last 16 should not come as a shock.

We won t talk about transition anymore…. the previous era is over, the 38-year-old, who won the Champions League with United in 2008, told Omnisport.

They are out of the Champions league. It s not a surprise. When you see them play in th…

Shaqiri hopes to relive Bayern Champions League win with Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri is hopeful of reliving the unbelievable feeling of winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich by helping Liverpool to the title this season.

Shaqiri was part of the Bayern side that conquered Europe in 2013, although he was an unused substitute in the Wembley final win against Borussia Dortmund.

The Switzerland international arrived at Liverpool during the close-season following a three-year stay at Stoke City and has featured twice in the Champions League, starring in Wednesday s 4-0 win over Red Star at Anfield.

Liverpool lost last year s final to Real Madrid and Shaqiri believes the Reds have the players at their disposal to go deep into the tournament once again this season.

I won the Champions League with Bayern Munich and that …

West Ham boost London Stadium capacity to 60,000

Premier League club West Ham have reached an agreement to increase the capacity of their London Stadium.

The number of tickets available to be sold for West Ham home matches has been capped at 57,000 since they moved to the host venue for the London 2012 Olympic games in 2016.

A deal with stadium operator E20 has increased that number to 60,000, with further scope to eventually fill the 66,000-seater arena.

That further expansion would give West Ham the second-biggest home ground in the Premier League behind Manchester United.

A statement from the club acknowledged the increased capacity would make London Stadium a more attractive proposition for potential naming rights partners.

West Ham United and its landlord E20 have agreed a plan which allow…

Guardiola: Silva signing would be my silver lining

Pep Guardiola says he will so happy when David Silva eventually puts pen to paper on a new Manchester City contract.

Silva has been in talks over a fresh deal at the Etihad Stadium, with his current agreement set to expire at the end of next season.

The Spain international, who joined City from Valencia in 2010, spoke last month of his desire to make it a decade in Manchester and to achieve the ambition of winning the Champions League with the club.

There have been no updates on the situation since, but Guardiola is determined to keep hold of one of his most prized assets.

What I like the most  he s a bit serious, shy, how competitive he is. [He s] aggressive in winning duels, more about technique. I admire him a lot, said the City boss.

Arsenal have been offered a chance to sign Barcelona s Denis Suarez, according to the .

Having started out at Manchester City, the midfielder arrived to Barcelona in 2013. He played one season for the Catalans B team before heading out on loan, first to Sevilla where he worked with current Arsenal manager Unai Emery, and then to Villareal, each loan for a year. He returned to Camp Nou in 2016, but he hasn t been able to nail down a starting spot for the La Liga champions.

Now completely out of Ernesto Valverde s plans, his entourage have been informed that the club wouldn t mind him leaving, and his services have been offered to Arsenal for as little as £14million.

Only Mourinho can get Chelsea back on track – Sneijder

Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder believes Jose Mourinho is the only manager capable of turning Chelsea s fortunes around and feels he deserves more respect.

The reigning Premier League champions have experienced a testing start to their title defence and sit 15th in the table after 11 games, some 14 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Off the pitch, Mourinho has been dogged by controversy, including being sent to the stands during a 2-1 defeat at West Ham, fined by the Football Association, handed a stadium ban and reportedly losing support in the Chelsea dressing room over the past few weeks.

Nevertheless, Sneijder has little doubt his former boss will get Chelsea back on track.

It is always difficult when you are losing games and…
